Inspired by an Armenian tradition of burning benzoin resin, originated by a pharmacist and a chemist in France. They dissolved the resin in alcohol and soaked blotting paper in the resulting solution. Voila! Paper incense – the original Papier d’Arménie. The benzoin resin itself came to be in Armenia via Levantine trade routes.
