Scent Profile

A high concentration of the Terpinen‑4‑ol compound is the main contributor to the scent of Tea Tree essential oil. The international standard, ISO 4730, requires the oil to contain roughly 35% to 40% of the compound. The result is a warm, spicy-peppery, slightly foresty aroma, reminiscent of cleanliness and healing.

Ways to Use It:

  • In a diffuser: Use with diffusers that dilute the oil, such as an ultrasonic diffuser (uses water)  or a reed diffuser (uses a carrier oil). Nebulizers produce minuscule droplets of pure oil, which may cause irritation over time, so use intermittent diffusing sessions, no longer than 15 minutes on. Do not use with heat warmers, which degrade it.
  • On skin, diluted: always in a carrier oil; never use straight from the bottle. Diluted with a carrier oil, it is very refreshing in the bath, or applied directly to the skin.
  • Household uses: There are a multitude of house-cleaning DIY recipes that use tea tree oil as an ingredient.

Before You Use It (for safety)

  • This Tea Tree essential oil is for external and aromatic use only. Do not take internally.
  • Always dilute before applying to skin, as undiluted tea tree oil tends to be harsh when applied topically. Be sure to patch-test a skin area first.
  • Tea tree is well tolerated when fresh and used properly, but oxidized oil can be an extreme irritant. Keep the cap on and the bottle out of light, and don’t use oil past its date.
  • If pregnant, breastfeeding, or taking medication, check with your doctor first.
  • Pets: Avoid diffusing around cats, dogs, and birds, and never apply to an animal.
  • Keep out of reach of children.
